The Yisrael Beitenu party headed by Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman is sponsoring a bill that would permit the senior minister to shut down funding for Peleg-affiliated yeshivos as well as the Bnei David Mechina located in Yishuv Eli. Lieberman has had issue with one of the leaders of Bnei David, Rabbi Yigal Levinstein, who spoke out against mixed-gender units and toeiva in the IDF.
According to the report aired on Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), in the shadow of the Jerusalem-based demonstrations by the Peleg faction last week, following the arrest of the deserters, Yisrael Beitenu intends to submit a bill that would deny funding to Torah institutions that incite soldiers and call for draft dodging.
The Minister of Finance, in consultation with the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Education, may decide that a Torah institution will not be considered a public institution in the matter of receiving support under the budget section if the head of that institution, which is also a religious-spiritual authority, did one of the following:
1. Knowingly released a call to avoid military service
2. Knowingly released a public call to incite, persecute, humiliate, act hostilely towards or use violence against a tzibur or segment of the population.
It is expected that chareidi parties will oppose the legislation, which they term “dangerous” but they wonder why the emphasis is on “religious institutions” rather than on academic institutions.
At the end of the Knesset’s summer recess, the Knesset approved, with the support of Yisrael Beitenu, the regulations of the draft law – not yet overturned by the High Court of Justice, which did not include the regulation that the defense minister could deprive a budget of meetings calling for refusal.

If this is the type of leadership the medina has heading the military we’re in big trouble if any of our “friendly” neighbors decides to “pay us a visit”! To overcome your adversaries you need to understand how they think. This man clearly lacks this skill. His response not only lacks forethought it also reveals a serious shortcoming on his part that our enemies will surely be grateful to have discovered. Furthermore, such foolish response is like trying to put out a grease fire with water. Very very ignorant!
I can only hope that more intelligent clear headed people will work together to negotiate a workable solution.
Referring to any army units as “toeiva” is really silly and outdated. I’m not aware of any exclusively LGBT units in Tzahal, but if they were, nothing is going to change by referring to them by their appropriate term, except that there will be one fewer issue with this publication.

Indeed, imagine the reaction to such an explicitly worded law in the U.S. targeting religious institutions/leaders specifically and ignoring secular institutions/leaders.
1. If they apply the same standards, many Arab and secular institutions might also be required to have their funds cut off.
2. To be effective, they would need to ban outside donors for funding anti-zionist institutions, which poses many legal difficulties. It woujld also be a public relations nightmare to be “cracking down” on those who oppose the war.
3. If they don’t ban non-government funding of anti-zionist institutions, they will be hurting only those zionist institutions which tolerate anti-zionist students, since it will only increase the position of anti-zionist yeshivos which rely on private sector (usually foreign) funding.
4. The easiest solution would be to recognize the protestors as conscientious objectors and treat them the same way as they do Arabs – no conscription, but significant legal discrimination in employment. No intelligent army conscripts unwilling soldiers since they prove to be highly unmotivated, incompetent and disloyal
Liberman knows that it’s just talk, because with the current govt. coalition, he could never get such a law passed.
Besides, the Peleg yeshivos will petition the supreme court why are they singled out and not arab schools who “also” incite against the army. Or universities where leftist lecturers occasionally incite against the “army of occpation” and military service. It’s a no go.
Yankelle – I dunno. I don’t think you can beat the Torah. I think “toeiva” is a very suitable term to describe them. Just ask G-d!
Yankelle – it would pay to reread an article and do your research before commenting. This article was referring to two separate issues that Rav Levinstein came out against. It sentence does not read “Toeiva UNITS in the IDF”. You read that into it and it is a mistake. Do your research and you’ll see for yourself.
