Shas Has to Fold Jerusalem Election Campaign Posters

YWN-ISRAEL reported on Monday, 26 Kislev 5773 that the Shas Party launched its election campaign, promising to work to prevent intermarriage and assist the poor. Photos of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu accompany the adverts and campaign slogans.

Now we take a step back, to the days when chareidi disregard for women was the top national story and when the chareidim compelled Egged to remove photos of females from ads on buses and bus stops in the capital. The decision by Egged led to protests from feminists, who blamed chareidim for treating women as second class citizens. This led to the Egged decision to stop showing people in ads, men and women, as the bus company tried to walk a fine line between appeasing chareidim and not insulting the feminists.

As a result of that decision, the Yerushalmim organization has turned to Israel’s Supreme Court, challenging just how Egged can refuse to display ads with women when it displays ads with men, in this case, Netanyahu and Lieberman.

In response, in line with the ever complicated world that exists in Eretz Yisrael, particularly in Yerushalayim, Egged pulled the Shas campaign, or at least the photos of the two ministers – fearing if it does not, it will be compelled to display ads with women, and that will lead to a chareidi outcry.

Canaan, the advertising company released a statement that the contactor responsible for the ad campaign made a mistake, and the ads containing photos of people should not have been approved.

  1. Hmmm. Putting clothes on a naked lady (what started the dispute) and she is respectable. Whereas putting a kippah on a politician (as in some of Shas’s ads) really doesn’t help – a politician with or without a kippah is just as annoying.
