NYC: Heavy Rain & Strong Winds Expected Wednesday Evening and Overnight


A cold front moving into the New York City metropolitan area will bring heavy rain and strong winds on Wednesday with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. In addition to likely rain showers, Wednesday evening into early morning Thursday, there is high potential for strong winds reaching up to 60 MPH and a slight chance of severe thunderstorms.

PRECIPITATION AND TIMING
The New York City area can expect 1 ½ to 2 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts possible if thunderstorms develop. Rain will start to move into the area in the late morning and early afternoon on Wednesday. The period of strongest rain and wind will be between 6:00 PM and Midnight. Lighter rain will linger over the area overnight and start to taper off early Thursday and clearing through the day on Thursday. Rainfall rates of 1-1.5 inches/hour are possible and may last for more than one hour.
Any thunderstorms that develop could bring damaging winds in excess of 65 MPH.

WINDS
Wednesday Morning: Sustained winds 8-15 MPH increasing by late afternoon to 15-20 MPH with gusts up to 35 MPH.
Afternoon/Evening: Sustained winds 30-40 MPH, with gusts up to 58 MPH. Wind gusts in thunderstorms may reach in excess of 65 MPH.
The strongest winds will be between 9:00PM Wednesday and 6:00 AM on Thursday.

FLOODING
Due to the subsurface layers of the ground remaining frozen, Flash Flooding is possible, as most rainfall will result in storm runoff.
Coastal Flooding is not expected.

A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for Wednesday evening through late Wednesday night.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for Wednesday evening through late Wednesday night.

CITY ACTIONS
The Flash Flood Emergency Plan has been activated
The Downed Tree Task Force has been notified for potential activation
The Department of Buildings, Parks and Recreation, and the MTA been notified about the high wind potential
