Bill to Extend Chief Rabbi’s Terms Passes First Reading

amar.jpgThe Knesset on Tuesday 8 Nissan 5773 passed the first reading of a bill that would extend the terms of the current chief rabbis until new elections are held. Deputy Minister of Religious Services pushed the bill forward, passing with 60 in favor, 6 opposed and 1 abstention.

During the session, MK (Yahadut Hatorah) Moshe Gafne got up and announced “we will oppose any legislation sponsored by Bayit Yehudi.” In response, Bayit Yehudi MK Moti Yogev informed Gafne that earlier in the week, he (Yogev) worked to persuade IDF officials to postpone the service of a talmid yeshiva, asking “Will you oppose this too?”

The bill was discussed by bayit Yehudi during coalition talks, and the party was assured that Likud/Beitenu would support the bill as part of the coalition agreements.
