The “Chief Rabbi” of the State of Israel (and its various cities) hiring and firing policies (and thus influence over the holder of the position) is not only by Baal HaBattim but even by irreligious (and anti-religious) Members of the Kenneset and other government officials.

The flaw in having a government appoint “chief rabbis” is that they can fire them for failing to live up to the standard of “political correctness” as defined not by the gedolei Torah, nor by the baal ha-battim, but by whichever group controls the government at the moment.In America, the introduction of separation of religion and state was primarily to protect religion from state (the modern liberals have twisted it for their own nefarious purposes).
