this is a unfortunatly common thing. The baal haSimcha puts up a general invitation in the local shul tell everyone of his upcoming wedding. The ganav reads the invite and knows when the family will not be in the apt, the night of the simcha or the ufruf or shabbos sheva brachos, knowing that the apt will be empty he calls his buddies and they break in and know they have several hours to enjoy roaming around the place.

the answer: get a trusted friend or neighbor who is not going to the simcha to baby sit the apt and make certain to have his/her cell phone on hand just in case of emergency.

normally the thief will first knock on door or call up to check if some one is home, since the thief knows all about the baal haSimcah.
