"Residents are demanding the state make Ocean Parkway safer"

Oh really?
Bube maasos!
I'm a local resident. Ocean Parkway is just fine. They should synchronise the lights a little better, though. It would greatly reduce the traffic build up during rush hours.
During daylight hours it is almost impossible to speed on Ocean Parkway (exept for a few seconds bet. J & L). To much volume.

First of all, the accident was not on 'Ocean Parkway'. Tractor Trailers are not allowed on Ocean Parkway. It was on the intersection between the Prospect Expressway and Church Avenue, where Ocean Parkway happens to also start. There are signs there warning pedestrians to please cross on the other side of the avenue to avoid getting in the way of the highway traffic. But some people just don't listen.

Second, I have witnessed a few accidents on Ocean Parkway, because I often bike along there on my way to work. Many of the pedestrian accidents happen when people don't obey the walk/don't walk signals, and start walking across when there isn't sufficient time to get safely to the other side. Then they are stuck in middle of the road, and last minute traffic (more on that later) make turns into those awkwardly situated pedestrians.

Many other accidents are because the turning lanes are often filled to capacity with cars, but the turning lights are very short. The last few cars therefore try to zoom across either after the light turns red (if the turning light is after the regular green) or after the opposing traffic has a green light (where the turning light is before the regular green.)

Speeding is not often the factor, since heavy traffic hardly ever allows for speeding.
