3 Israeli Universities Make the Top 100 in 2013

grad.jpgThe Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ranks universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score.

The distribution of data for each indicator is examined for any significant distorting effect; standard statistical techniques are used to adjust the indicator if necessary. Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution. The highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. An institution’s rank reflects the number of institutions that sit above it.

Three Israeli universities are counted among the top 100 in the world. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is ranked number 59; the Technion Israel Institute of Technology number 77; and Weizmann Institute of Science 92. The top three spots went to Harvard, Stanford and the University of California respectively. See the top 100 rating chart.

  1. Israeli yeshivos are probably 2/3 of the leading yeshivos, and bring in a substantial amount of money into the economy through substantial donations from other countries as well as tuition and expenses money spent by foreign students.

  2. If these people were ranking yeshivas instead, what criteria would be used? What would the rankings be? Should we use number of seforim published? Shiurim given? How frequently chiddushim were cited by others?

  3. #2- Seven Israeli universities made the list of the top 500 but only three of them (Hebrew U, Technion, Weizmann) made the top 100. Tel Aviv University was ranked in the 101-150 tier.
