Kerry Warns Russia of Expensive New Sanctions

putiSecretary of State John Kerry is accusing Russia of failing to live up to commitments it made to ease the crisis in Ukraine.

In unusually blunt language, Kerry said Thursday that unless Moscow takes immediate steps to de-escalate the situation, Washington will have no choice but to impose additional sanctions. He said It would be a “grave” and “expensive mistake.” His comments come amid an increasingly bitter war of words over who is to blame for the crisis in Ukraine that is becoming steadily more violent.

The U.S. says Russia is fomenting unrest and separatist sentiment in eastern Ukraine following its annexation of the strategic Crimean Peninsula. Russia accuses the U.S. of encouraging a pro-Western government in Kiev to adopt anti-Russian policies.

One Response

  1. Russia is shouting loudly that it has nothing to do with the protests, that the protestors are justified and that it is a crime for Ukraine to stop them. If these protestors were inside Russia they would be rapidly and violently suppressed; the media would be blocked from reporting about such “hooligans”. These protestors are furthering Russia’s clearly stated aims of restoring her wider power and influence. Yet they don’t seem to realise what will happen to them if their region joins Russia: a few will get medals and a nice pension yet all will then find themselves living under an increasingly authoritarian regime.
