NYU Hospital Awarded $1.13B In Sandy Recovery Aid

nyuNYU Langone Medical Center will receive $1.13 billion in storm recovery aid.

Hospital and federal officials say it’s the second-largest award for a single project in the history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The facility, located by the East River, was badly damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

The New York Times says the money will be used for the installation of interior flood doors and barriers, reinforced walls, seals and pumps.

Sen. Charles Schumer helped negotiate the award. He said the money will be awarded in a lump sum in advance.

On Oct. 29, 2012, the storm surge sent 15 million gallons of water rushing into the medical center, which lost its backup generator power. More than 300 patients had to be evacuated.
