Thank you Rabbi Hoffman. You clarified the process so I can at least fathom the rationale for shellac being acceptable under some opinions. I was always baffled and very uneasy about shellacked items receiving a hechsher. Ok, but then the mention of added alcohol was kind of …shall we say, shellacked over? Alcohol for food products, I always assumed, would either come from a grain or a corn source, rendering us mighty shailos now for Pesach, even if we don’t go near candies and such. What of the coated fruits? All I can say is, ashrei all those people who taught me the minhag of peeling everything you eat on Pesach. Maybe in light of this it should be encouraged more widely.

My grandmother was right when she said that the shilac was from paint and the red was from blood…….. maybe not exactly but something like that.
