NY Gov. Cuomo, NYPD Union Leaders Talk

cuomNew York’s governor has met with police union leaders amid continuing discord between New York City police and Mayor Bill de Blasio and the wider debate about law enforcement conduct and officer safety.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Tuesday’s meeting with union officials touched on a “range of issues” including a police discipline bill awaiting Cuomo’s action. The discussion also involved potential legislative proposals.

On Wednesday Cuomo dismissed questions about whether he would “mediate” the conflict between de Blasio and police unions, who have blamed the mayor for encouraging anti-NYPD sentiment.

Cuomo did say the dispute needs to be resolved and added that he is considering statewide options to address concerns about the handling of police misconduct as well as proposals to ensure officers “feel respected and protected.”
