Cuomo Calls For New Policy After Criticism Of Email Purges

cuomNew York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling for a new, uniform email retention policy for state leaders following criticism of his administration’s practice of purging all emails after 90 days.

The Democratic governor’s policy concerned government watchdogs and some lawmakers who said it was an affront to government transparency and accountability.

Cuomo’s office had said the policy dated back to former Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s administration, but Cuomo expanded it this year to cover other state agencies.

Cuomo’s top spokeswoman said Thursday night that the governor would meet with lawmakers, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli (dee-NAP’-oh-lee) to create a single email retention policy for all state officials.

Cuomo’s email troubles come as Hillary Rodham Clinton faces questions over her handling of email correspondence during her tenure as secretary of state.
