Cuts in State Funding for Yeshiva Students Result in a Change in Policy Regarding IDF Draft

idffThe chareidi tzibur during the past years has been split regarding the need for a talmid yeshiva to report to an induction center or not. Some admorim have instructed chassidim not to report to an induction center at all, in line with the position of HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita. The same holds true with yeshivos affiliated with Rav Auerbach.

However, Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita and other gedolim in Bnei Brak continue to instruct bnei torah to report for a first time only and complete forms requesting personal information, nothing more.

Today, a growing number of yeshivos appear to be following the psak of Bnei Brak and talmidim are reporting to an IDF induction center in response to a first draft notice. It appears that today, even the yeshivos affiliated with Rav Auerbach appear to be sending talmidim for the first draft notice. This may be in response to a new Ministry of Education decision to cut funding for all talmidim who fail to appear in an induction center as required by law. The ministry is no longer paying to fund a talmid who does not report to an induction center, which could leave yeshivos with a major fiscal hole.

According to a Kikar Shabbos report, Yeshiva Beis Matisyahu which is affiliated with Rav Auerbach, sent letters to parents informing them their sons should not report to an induction center. However another letter has now been sent reversing this decision, instructing parents to send their sons to report to permit them to clarify their status. The letter further states that talmidim who do not comply will have to increase their tuition as state funding will be lost as a result of their failure to report to an IDF facility.

  1. The fact is: In every generation, some tzadikim are given the job of leadership, being involved with all facets of the Tzibur at large, and some have the job of yelling “no!, no!” reminding us of our core ideals. The later job does not require the test of reality, or full knowledge of all factual details…

  2. So understand this well – before this, this past year, Some of these Ravs instructed vehemently Not to report for exemption , telling the Talmidim they should go to JAIL rather than succumb to simply filing for an army exemption. But NOW WHEN THESE RAVS YESHIVAS WILL LOSE FUNDING, they now change their minds ,oh it’s not that urgent they say, not such a sin, the Yeshiva students should not stop traffic should Definitely go sign up for the exemption, so that the government taxpayer money keeps flowing in. Hmmmmm- either something is issur or not, it shouldn’t be dependent on cash flow, and notice the risk of a yeshiva student having a criminal record and going to jail didn’t affect the ruling, just cash.

  3. It’s all about the money. It’s hard to take people seriously if their supposed convictions can be altered for a few shekels.

  4. Seemingly this won’t affect the Briskers, Satmar, or Eida yeshivos since they don’t take funding from the Ministry of Education anyway.

  5. Real shame to see everyone judging the gedolim. May be the yeshivos being forced to close is more important than a few bachurim spending in night in a holding cell? (I know ppl who’ve done it and had a good time, with other bachurim)

  6. The dilemma of reporting to an induction center is more laden with weight than 99% of readers and posters’ are aware of.

The Defense Ministry wishes everyone to be in their database as there is more potential collaboration of most of these growing up youths (out of uniform than even in) ..
in whatever field of endeavor many of them will end up ,all over the globe

    Ponder:Whether to collaborate or not

(There is also a second minor issue of disgusting instances of leering females during the physical)
