A small group of demonstrators is protesting at New York City Hall against the possibility of hiring 1,000 new police officers.
More than a dozen folks chanted “No new cops!” Tuesday morning.
Several of them held signs that singled out individual city councilmembers, demanding that they not “betray” their communities by advocating for more police officers.
A council proposal to hire the new officers has become a sticking point in the new budget.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has not supported the move though his police commissioner has signaled some support for the idea.
The advocates believe that the additional officers will add strain to the at-times-tense relations between the police and communities of color.
Proponents of the plan say it will lead to more effective and equitable policing.

How about white cops for white neighborhoods, and black cops for black neighborhoods?
Must be same peoe that demanded end of stop and frisk. Murder is up crime is up.
What is the point of having this article in Yeshiva World? There certainly were no members of the frum community in this demonstration. We support the police and wish there were more of them.
More cops of any color will save more Black lives. It’s Blacks that are being shot and killed by other Blacks.
I cant understand why noone sees what is going on ! They need more cops , not for our safety , but to give more tickets and to control the people. Welcome to Germany, Were heading in the same direction.
Those protesters should call Al Sharpton when crisis occurs.
They might just put African American cops in those neighborhoods then everything will be just fine..
Pardon my Typo.. The African American cops also don’t want to work in those areas. Racism is such a problem in this great country that even the AA people are scared from their own people..
@3. So YWN should ignore everything that isn’t directly related to Judaism. A lot of Jews live in New York and anything that happens in New York can effect those of us living there.
