GOP’s Chairman Doesn’t Expect Trump Third-Party Candidacy

truRepublican Party chairman Reince Priebus said Monday that he’s not worried about Donald Trump eventually running for president as an independent.

“I don’t see that happening,” Priebus said in a nationally broadcast interview. He added that it is universally felt in party circles that “if Hillary Clinton is going to get beat, she has to get beat by a Republican.”

Of speculation that the billionaire real estate executive and TV celebrity might run as an independent, Priebus told the NBC “Today” show, “I think you’ve seen Donald Trump walk that back the last few days.”

Priebus also was asked about Trump’s standing at the top of many polls. “I thnk he’s speaking out to people that are really frustrated with Washington,” the RNC chairman replied.

“I do agree that tone matters and how you speak matters,” Priebus said.

He defended the GOP’s decision to allow no more than 10 GOP hopefuls on the stage for an Aug. 6 debate.

But Priebus also said provisions have been made to ensure that the half-dozen Republican aspirants who don’t make the cut for the debate among 10 will have an opportunity for a face off on their own on the same day in a debate to precede the 10-person event.

Priebus said the party had too many debates — 23 — in the 2011-2012 cycle, adding that “we’ve taken control of the debates.”

“Every candidate is going to be able to compete on debate night,” he said. Priebus wondered aloud why there hadn’t been more discussion among pundits about why the Democratic Party hasn’t announced a debate involving Clinton and her rivals.

  1. But one can expect the mass media (which is left leaning) to support a third party, since it would make sure that Clinton (or Sanders, or whatever) wins. Remember that the ultra-left Ralph Neder’s candidacy is why Bush was elected in 2000, and had Ross Perot supported the Republicans in 1992, Hillary would be a famous lawyer and former first lady of Arkansas.

Well, duh! Hillary is being foisted upon the dumb Democrats. She waited her turn and now is her time. The Liberal media is so excited to now have a “woman” President, after a black President.
Lincoln Chafee??? Are you kidding me?

  3. #2- Lincoln Chafee is basically an independent who started as a liberal Republican (in the tradition of many previous liberal Republicans such as Nelson Rockefeller, Theodore Roosevelt, and probably Richard Nixon). If the former liberal Republicans were to ally with the conservative Democrats, they could perhaps we a serious “third party” – assuming the Republicans move to the “right” while the Democrats move to the “left” (consider a Trump-Sanders elections). However a right wing third party is inherently counterproductive.
