A burst of thunderstorm activity across the Chicago-area in mid-afternoon Sunday resulted in trees down and power outages in the Jewish populated area. Eyewitnesses tell YWN that the storm lasted only a few minutes, but brought high winds, large hail, and dangerous thunder and lightening.

Trees were blown down by the high winds that characterized these storms, blocking streets in the 6500 blocks of Bosworth, Greenview and Newgard Avenues in Rogers Park.

The dome in Rosemont, outside the field where the Chicago Bandits softball team plays, collapsed as the storm moved through that area, witnesses said.

The National Weather Service had issued severe thunderstorm warnings for areas north and west of Chicago earlier this afternoon.

  1. Yup! Our lights kept flickering. A large part of a tree fell on a car right outside our window. The hail stones were quite loud banging against our window. They are expecting more storms starting around 8:00PM. But right now, it’s nice and sunny outside.

  2. This may shock some east coasters but there is actually more than one jewish neighborhood in Chicago i hear they got tellyphone and electricitee out there too.

  3. The storm came thru very fast and furious around 3 this afternoon and only lasted for a few minutes, but it did a lot of damage in those five minutes. The power was out until around 9:30 tonight, so things are getting back to normal now, B”H.
