Miami: Teen Who Murdered Rabbi Yosef Raksin Pleads Not Guilty

rakA 15-year-old boy held without bond in the fatal shooting of a rabbi faced a judge Monday morning.

The victim’s daughter and son-in-law were in court along with DeAndre Charles’ family as a not guilty plea was entered.

“The state still hasn’t provided any discovery,” Charles’ attorney, Adam Goodman, said. “We know everyone wants to know the facts about the case.”

Police said detectives received tips about the shooting for more than a year about two possible gunmen and a resident in the area of the shooting even drew up a rough sketch to help police.

Ultimately, it was Charles who was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rabbi Joseph Raksin.

Police said Raksin, 60, was killed Aug. 9, 2014, while walking to a synagogue in northeast Miami-Dade County.

Detectives believe robbery was the motive behind the shooting.

Meanwhile, Charles’ family maintains that he was home at the time of the crime and now want to see the state’s evidence.

“They say there are allegations of possible DNA,” Goodman said. “I don’t know. No one has a clue at this time, so we’ll see what they have.”

Charles was arrested Wednesday at the home where he lives with his mother, stepfather and five siblings. He is a freshman at Miami Norland Senior High School.

His previous juvenile record includes theft and resisting arrest without violence charges.
