Dati Leumi Community Polled to Determine its Position Regarding Public Buses in Israel on Shabbos


egednnThe dati leumi Kippa website is polling readers to determine their position regarding public transportation in Israel on Shabbos. The poll does not indicate how many voters have participated.

The polling results at 13:30 on Tuesday, 7 Adar I shows the following responses:

52% opposed for this will lead to massive chilul Shabbos

20% in favor. “Why not?”

16% in favor for as long as they make certain is does impact religious citizens

12% opposed because we must maintain the status quo

  1. This is not the “easy” question is appears to be. I used to think this was a pashut “no” but consider the following:
    1) The lack of public transportation in many cases leads to more people driving, which is actually an increase in chillul shabbos.
    2) The “imposed” measures of shabbos in many cases create an attitude of “us versus them” among chilonim, making it harder to start a meaningful conversation about the beauty of shabbos.
    3) Isreal is a democracy, not a theocracy. In the US, this would never be a conversation.
