Will The Appointment Of Dayanim Topple The Coalition Government?

1The committee to appointment dayanim is scheduled to convene on Monday 24 Nissan. The committee is chaired by Minister Dr. Yuval Steinitz. The chareidim are up in arms for their fear the committee is meeting to push through dati leumi appointments, a move they fear would change the character of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel’s batei din system. The committee may appoint seven new dayanim.

The committee has been ordered to convene by the High Court of Justice, to appoint six or seven dayanim to the Supreme Beis Din towards filling the seven vacant slots which are causing an unprecedented backlog in cases. This includes cases of verifying one’s Jewishness, divorce, and inheritance cases to mention a few. The appointments will also create vacancies in district batei din and the committee has the authority to make those appoints as well.

MK Uri Maklev expressed concern, that the committee is trying to change the character of dayanim in the batei din system.

There is talk that if the committee convenes and pushes through the appointments of dati leumi dayanim, the move will be met with threats to break from the coalition by chareidi parties. However, it is pointed out that while rumors have been floated, there have not been any concrete threats to break apart the coalition if dayanim affiliated with Bayit Yehudi are appointed.

  1. Just wondering – if the candidates in question are Talmidei Chachamim and Yar’ei Shamayim, why should anyone object? The Torah is the same Torah irrespective of one’s Yarmulka.

A little less Sin’as Chinam would be in order during Sefira, after all.
