US Rep. Jerrold Nadler Wins Contentious Primary Battle In NY

nadlerRep. Jerrold Nadler won the Democratic primary Tuesday for a New York City congressional seat he’s held for nearly a quarter-century, defeating his opponent in the first Democratic primary challenge he’s faced in two decades.

Nadler’s win came after a contentious primary battle that brought his support of President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal to the forefront of the campaign in a congressional district heavily comprised of Jewish voters.

“It’s a great night,” Nadler campaign spokesman Danny Schwarz said. “Tonight, in a pretty emphatic fashion, we heard from the voters.”

Nadler, who was first elected to Congress in 1992, was the only Jewish Democratic U.S. House member to support the Iran deal. His opponent, Oliver Rosenberg, had pushed Nadler’s support of that measure to the center of the campaign in New York’s 10th Congressional District, which covers a large portion of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, including the Borough Park neighborhood, which is largely comprised of Orthodox Jewish families.

Schwarz said Nadler “never took anything for granted” and debated Rosenberg publicly because “it’s important that voters hear from their elected leaders.”

Rosenberg, a former investment banker, had said during a debate on public radio station WNYC that Nadler supported a “disastrous” bill. But Nadler argued that he supported a measure aimed at ensuring Iran wouldn’t have access to nuclear weapons for several years, saying the nation would be “far less dangerous an enemy without nuclear bombs.”

  1. Nadler won from his support in Manhattan. In Boro Park, he won by one, yes ONE, vote. Which shows you, every vote counts.
    Voter turnout was incredibly low.

  2. Are you completely ignorant who Nadler’s horrid opponent Shr”y was?!

The media had been focusing and eagerly watching to see how the jewish community was going to vote. Were we throw to the torah in the garbage and vote for an open..,who was/is aggressively promoting his evil?!

While jerry nadler has been possibly among the worst members of congress, his horrid opponent was/would have been incomparably worse.

  3. JERRY WINS: Nadler Pulls Out Victory in Contentious ?!?

“He was re-elected to his twelfth full term in 2014, receiving a resounding 88% of the vote.”

  4. It may have been ‘contentious’, but it wasn’t even close. The news services showed Congressman Nadler winning with 88%.

However, Cong Nadler SHOULD NOT consider this victory as an endorsement of his voting record. The fact is, his opponent DID NOT gain any traction in the frum or even mainstream Jewish community because of his “alternative” lifestyle as well as being an activist for that lifestyle.

  5. “Cong Nadler SHOULD NOT consider this victory as an endorsement of his voting record

If winning by a margin of 88% to 12% isn’t an endorsement, I don’t know what is.

FWIW the only time I have ever seen Rep. Nadler in person was at Lincoln Square Synagogue when he was davening from the amud. I had no idea!
