Azariya On Trial For Manslaughter But When A Colonel Does It…

1The defense attorney in the manslaughter trial of Sgt. Elor Azariya wishes to bring IDF Colonel Yisrael Shomer as a witness. The court on Sunday was scheduled to issue its ruling in the case.

Back in July 2015, Colonel Shomer, who was serving as the Binyamin Brigade commander, came under attack with large stones. The windshield of his command vehicle was pierced and B’chasdei Hashem, no one was killed or injured. Shomer got out of the vehicle and fired in the air to distance the Arab attackers. They were undeterred and continued hurling rocks at him. He then fired at them, wounding one seriously, who died a short time later.

There were shouts to prosecute Shomer but ultimately, on 2 Nissan, the announcement was made that the case against him was being closed. It was ruled that his response was appropriate and within the rules of engagement.

The defense feels that incident was far more serious this his client’s, yet his client faces manslaughter charges for shooting a wounded terrorist who a short time ago stabbed and IDF soldier.
