Israel: Woman Visits Kever Of Mother-In-Law Only To Find The Matzeivah Of Another

1Ramat Gan resident Janetta Berman traveled to the new Beersheva Cemetery to visit the kever of her mother-in-law Mrs. Shaina Berman but found the matzeivah of another person in place, Walla News reports, adding the incident occurred about two weeks ago. Mrs. Berman adds she has been visiting this kever for close to 20 years and is quite certain of the location, but this time, there was a kever in the name of Bernardo Tovorovsky. Nevertheless, her first thought is she got confused and retraced her steps and was then certain she was in the correct place but her mother-in-law’s matzeivah was gone.

Cemetery Director Avraham Norver was contacted and he escorted Mrs. Berman to the gravesite. He concurred, that the kever should have the matzeivah of her late mother-in-law, admitting he did not have an immediate explanation. Avraham checked back in the office, traced their records, and returned to the correct area plot only to find themselves in the same place, but the matzeivah was not that of Mrs. Berman’s mother-in-law but Mr. Tovorovsky, who died on the same day.

According to a cemetery worker, a new matzeivah on the location most likely was done by one of the companies that prepares and installs tombstones.

Osnat, a granddaughter of the nifteres explains the family was in shock. She realized that only the matzeivah could have been changed, but it is also possible the remains of her grandmother were moved chas v’sholom.

Attorney Daniel Toldo was called into the picture to represent Mrs. Berman. He explained there are no words to describe the emotional suffering endured by family members, who are speculating what might have occurred.

The Ministry of Religious services confirms the complaint was filed and the matter is still being probed together with officials from the Beersheva Religious Council.

  1. I get it. When my mother & I visited the kever of my father, the plot next to him that my mother bought had obviously been used. It took me ages to calm her down & the shul secretary, as soon as I identified myself & began to explain “we were at the beis chaim…” interrupted and said, yes, we dug up the meis as soon as we realized.

    Words just failed me.
