kap[VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE]

Minister of Agriculture Uri Ariel is doing his utmost to encourage the continuation of the minhag of kaporos, albeit without Chickens.

Ariel said “Kaporos have been done for generations and the minhag of part of our tradition before Yom Kippur. In recent years we have made an effort to encourage the public to continue this important minhag, but not with chickens heading for shechita, but with money which is given to tzedaka. This is especially good since it eliminates concerns of animal suffering while providing tzedaka for the needy”.

Ariel’s ministry is seeking to get the word out, to perform the minhag with money, which is given to those in need before Yom Kippur.

In order to assist getting the message to the public, the ministry is spending NIS 750,000 including ads in chareidi newspapers and other forms of advertising including the accompanying video.

  1. They’re just embarrassed (like some of our liberal posters here) about this minhag.

There’s no reason, like the general breeding and shechting that it can’t be done without tzar bar lchaim and hygienically, like my local chicken kapporas does each year. It’s run in aid of a local school (all kaporas money goes to tzedokah, whether done with cash or paying for a chicken) and we’ve had the local authorities visiting but not being able to find fault with the conditions.

How can the ministry mix in, and waste 750K on trying to change an establish minhag, and yet expect the rest of the world to be tolerant of shechita c’din?
