Litzman Backs Producing More Gluten Free Food Products

1Israel’s Ministry of Health announced it is working to significantly lowering the price of gluten free food items in line with recommendation of a government committee that probed the matter. The committee included representatives of the ministry as well as the Ministry of the Economy and Bituach Leumi.

The committee studied why gluten free products are so expensive and then approved steps towards lowering prices. The government plans to infuse up to NIS 9 million into factories producing gluten free items towards encouraging more items at a lower cost. There will also be a relaxing of import restrictions for gluten free items as well as a similar incentive to local industry willing to produce similar non-gluten items towards improved public health.

Health Minister Yaakov Litzman praised the move towards providing more and less expensive items for the many who are compelled to use gluten free items, a move that he believes will improve overall health.

  1. Would someone please tell me what is wrong with gluten? As I understand it – and I could be wrong – gluten is the portion of wheat flour that contains protein. What is wrong with that?

I know there is one disease – celiac disease – which is treated, in part, by not eating gluten. But plenty of us humans do not have that disease.
