The assumption reflected in your headline is that Deri and Yishai are rivals – but on this issue they see “eye to eye”.
For the frum Sefardim to be sucessful they need the support of the Ashkenazi hareidim (as well as of the largely Ashkenazi “dati”). Therefore both want to promote good relations between the core elements of the Shomer Shabbos community, since only if these groups unite politically would it be even remotely possible for them to take over the government (which is Shas’s goal, as opposed to the Ashkenzi hareidim who merely want patronage).
