FDNY Wins Worldwide Life-Saving Competition

(Wednesday, September 15th, 2010)

A three-member team of FDNY Emergency Service first-responders won a worldwide life-saving competition this month in Poland, defeating more than 40 teams from 16 foreign countries, the FDNY has announced.

The FDNY team – comprised of Paramedics Joe Hudak and Eddy Perez and EMT Joe Fortis – beat all comers, even teams with physicians competing in three different drills.

Those exercises included mock incidents designed to severely test the competitors’ capabilities under life-and-death situations — pulling a man out of the river and immobilizing him; treating two victims of cardiac arrest simultaneously and assisting 10 victims of a four-vehicle accident.
