As the father of a son now gone several years from drug abuse, I don’t trivialize any mind altering harmful chemical. Substance abuse is a manifestation of an illness. It may be loneliness or a general inability to interact with others. “Lo tov liyose odom l’vado” can also apply to the “outsider”, the boy or girl lacking the social skills to become a part of the “klal”. It is within the abilities of every Jew, regardless of his or her level of learning, to identify these outsiders and draw them into the “klal”. Show them warmth, caring, and friendship. Actively seek them out and make them feel they have a place with the “klal”; show them they are wanted and appreciated. Some loners will never allow anyone to draw close, but others are waiting whether they know it or not. “Lo tamode al dom ra’echo”, I believe, applies to those who ignore the chronic outsiders, leaving them to find comfort in chemicals of any sort that will bring them to an early grave, R”L.

Any Rav Thant has the ability to stop this terrible trend, has an obligation to do so. Not doing that the Gemara says that It goes on his cheshbon. A Lchaim should be limited to a drop anymore is assur lehalacha.
