The Arrival of the Mir Yeshiva Boys from Shanghai – An Interview

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

m[By Rabbi Yair Hoffman]

Their ordeal is well known and well-documented. Students from the Mir Yeshiva escaped the clutches of the Nazis by a hairsbreadth – and went to Kobe, Japan and then spent the war years in Shanghai, China. But how did these Yeshiva boys arrive in the United States? An 18 year old Sally Cohen (now Mrs. Hirsch) traveled with the Mir Yeshiva from Shanghai to the United States. The ship they traveled on was the SS General M.C. Meigs, a US Navy ship. It departed on January 1st, 1949 and arrived on January 24th, 1949. The Mir students and Miss Cohen traveled third class. She shared her experience with the Five Towns Jewish Times.

YH: Mrs. Hirsch, how did you come in contact with the Mir Yeshiva?
SH: While we were in Shanghai – the Mir students gave classes and taught the local Sefardic Jewish community all sorts of Torah classes. They would teach us in the main Sefardic shul in Shanghai. They were single bochurim and they made us all frummer. One of their names was Rabbi Schechter, another Rabbi Borgen.. I don’t remember all their names anymore but many of them became important Rabbis later on in America.

YH: Are you still in touch with any of them?
SH: I did run into them throughout the years, but there is hardly anyone left anymore.

YH: Where did the Mir boys stay?
SH: In Shanghai they lived in a ghetto called Honque. They would come to the Sefardic community often and they had their own minyan for Maariv later in the Sefardic shul.. They also had all their weddings there during the night.

YH: The Japanese had occupied China at the time?
SH: Yes. All the American Mir bochurim had to wear a big A on their clothing.. The British had to wear a B. They called us Naquni – which meant All foreigners in Japanese.. But the Mir boys were all in the Honque.

YH: Why did you decide to go to America?
SH: I wanted to continue in a Bais Yaakov environment. Rebbitzen Kaplan had a Bais Yaakov on South Ninth Street in Williamsburg and the plan was for me to go there.

YH: How many girls from Shanghai came over with you?
SH: There were a little less than ten.. But the Yeshiva boys were a lot.

YH: How did you feel travelling without family?
SH: I was frightened and I was plenty scared.. Because we were Shomer Shabbos my father asked the Rabbi what to do about travelling.. He was told that we had to come on the boat early a couple days before Shabbos and then it would be muttar.

YH: What did the ticket for the ship cost?
SH: Not a penny. The American Navy ship brought us all here for free – there was no ticket cost.

YH: What was the ship ride like?
SH: Most of us were sick the whole time. The ship was light boat and there were no individual rooms. The beds were in one big room – bed after bed after bed. The girls and women were in a different room but the same way. First we stopped in Guam and the ship refilled with food supplies. We did not get off the ship in Guam though. Then we stopped in Honolulu. They took us to the Jewish community there. There was one house in which we all gathered. The Jewish people there were very nice. They loaded us up with sardines and canned goods.

YH: Did the Mir boys have minyanim and a Sefer Torah?
SH: I can hardly remember. Remember, I was a very young girl then..

YH: What were the meals like?
SH: Well, almost all of us were very sick and we barely ate anything. The cooks used to try to get us to eat. They said that all the food in the pot this time or that time was kosher – there was no pork in it. But we were all pretty frum and we did not eat of course. We had some of our own kosher food.

YH: How many suitcases did you land with?
SH: I don’t remember but my niece told me that I came with four suitcases. She was able to look it up.

YH: What happened when you landed?
SH: We landed in San Francisco Harbor. They took us to a hotel for three days there. HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society paid for it, but it was arranged through one of the Torah organizations. And then they put us on a train for New York.

YH: What did you do when you arrived in New York?
SH: The Mir boys went to the Yeshiva in Brooklyn and were taken in the dormitories. They made room for them. I was accepted in the Bais Yaakov in New York but there were no dorm places anymore. I stayed with a wonderful family in Boro Park. Rebbitzen Kaplan a”h played ball with us in the park in Williamsburg. There is a park there right next to the Bais Yaakov. This wouldn’t happen nowadays – but she was very close to all the girls.

YH: Thank you so much!

INTERVIEW – Anthony Weiner: I’ve Delivered For The Frum Community

Sunday, September 8th, 2013

weiner boro parkAnthony Weiner is most famously known for his fiery speeches on the House floor and his advocacy for liberal issues such as a single-payer health-care system. Notwithstanding his most recent scandals, Mr. Weiner still believes his embattled campaign is on course of victory, based on his ideas and record matched to the other candidates running for mayor in the Democratic primary.

One of the determining constituents in the upcoming primary are Jewish voters, especially Orthodox Jewish voters, who have an array of candidates to choose from based on their relationship with the community.

As a candidate who represented part of Brooklyn’s Jewish community in the City Council and as Congressman, Mr. Weiner firmly believes he can count on votes as an act of Hakores HaTov (gratitude and appreciation).

In an exclusive interview with YWN, Mr. Weiner reflected on his record as a champion for Jewish causes.

YWN: What’s your message meeting with Jewish voters, talking your ideas about the future or touting your record in helping the community as a council member and congressman?

AW: Well, I do both. This is a job interview. And with all job interviews, your employer wants to know what you’re going to do for their organization, basically, what your plans are for the city. But I also know that one of the things they are looking at is: Have you been there? What have you been doing over the years? I think my record, on issues that are important to the frum community, are second to none in this race.

“If people want to talk about what I have done and what I plan to do, in both cases, I think I’m head and shoulders above the other people who’re running.
I understand the frum community very well. I’m proud to have had the community’s support for many years and I think I’ve earned it.”

YWN: Senator Al D’Amato, on behalf of the Bill Thompson campaign, blasted Bill de Blasio for accepting the endorsement of George Soros. What’s your opinion?

AW: Isn’t Al D’Amato a Republican? You’re asking me about two people who’re getting endorsements. I don’t know who did better in that deal. But all I can say is that I’m not trying to line up famous people. I’m focusing on the citizens of our community and my record in helping the community rings well more than any endorsement.”

In a shouting match with a Jewish voter, during a campaign stop in Borough Park Erev Rosh Hashanah, Mr. Weiner told the guy: “I fought very hard for this community and delivered more that you will ever in your entire life.”

Strolling down the avenue, Mr. Weiner told YWN he’s certain voters will judge him by his record.

“People know what I have done. People understand how hard I worked for the community and how much I’ve delivered for the community,” he said. “At a certain point, I think it’s time that the community understands it.”

Asked to compare his level of support to the ones of Bill de Blasio and Bill Thompson, Mr. Weiner said he’s not willing to talk about others but himself. “I think I’m going to do very well in the Orthodox Jewish community. Tachlis, no one can hold a candle to my record. What have they done, compared to what I’ve done, for the community?” Mr. Weiner asked.

In the most recent Siena College poll, only 9 percent of Jewish voters expressed their intention of voting for Anthony Weiner for Mayor.

D’Amato: Bill de Blasio ‘Disqualified’ For Accepting George Soros’s Endorsement

Monday, August 19th, 2013

de blasio sorosThe campaign for mayor of New York City is getting to its final stages. So far, issues like Stop-and-Frisk and education have taken the spotlight in the Democratic primary, which explains the insurgence of Bill de Blasio’s candidacy as the progressive choice over Bill Thompson, who’s has the base of support that would count him in the runoff under any circumstance. Yet, there’s one component missing in the campaign for mayor that had been part of the conversation in the presidential elections and previous citywide elections, and the man missing to voice that is former mayor Ed Koch.

Were Koch still alive, he would’ve played a major role at mobilizing whole communities to support the candidate of his choice. “I can’t think of a candidate who’s a favorite among the universal group of Jews,” George Arzt recently told Tablet Magazine. “I don’t think there’s anyone who can coalesce such a coalition around him.” And it’s not just about personality—it’s about taking real stances on issues that matter to voters. “You don’t hear anybody in the mayoral race with a foreign policy,” Arzt went on. “Ed Koch always had a foreign policy, Israel being his key priority. But it used to be Ireland, Italy, and Israel.” Now, he said, “no one really speaks of a foreign policy except to address immigration as a broad issue.”

While the candidates running for mayor have each expressed, on the trail, pro-Israel statements to hawkish stances on Israel, it was never an issue of debate between the candidates.

Following the announcement of George Soros backing Bill de Blasio for mayor, the issue of Israel has been brought back in the picture by a key surrogate for the campaign of Bill Thompson. Jewish voters who support the State of Israel should be troubled by that endorsement and reconsider their support of Bill de blasio as their choice for mayor, former Senator Al D’Amato told YWN.

“New York city has an unbreakable bond with the State of Israel and its people. That means whoever is going to be elected as our next mayor, will have a major platform and a major microphone, second only to the President and the secretary of state, to state of behalf of the things that are important to the people and the state of Israel,” Mr. D’Amato, who spoke by phone with YWN on Sunday evening, said. “And that’s why Bill de Blasio’s decision to accept the support from a known anti-Israel as George Soros is so deeply troubling and disturbing.”

“It’s troubling to me as a New Yorker and it should be troubling to every other New Yorker, especially the Jewish voters, who want to maintain our City’s strong relationship with the State of Israel. No American should be silent as it relates to this guy – Soros,” he said.

Mr. D’Amato pointed out to the Washington Post Op-Ed by George Soros in which he claims that the main stumbling block to Democracy in the Middle East is Israel.

“It is so disquieting to see a major political force, a major candidate like Bill de Blasio accept his endorsement. That is unacceptable,” Mr. D’Amato said. “I would hope that Bill de Blasio would renounce those statements and renounce the support that George Soros is giving him. This is not a political game. This is about the future of the people in Israel and we cannot sit idly by and just say nothing.”

“I hope that the Jewish community, when they find out this Soros situation, how anti-Israel he is, that it will make the difference,” he added.

YWN: Does this disqualify Bill de Blasio from serving as an advocate for Israel as he has been so for so many years?

AD: Yes.

Mr. D’Amato also told YWN that he’s planning to join Bill Thompson on the campaign trail at various events in the Jewish community.

Reached for a comment, a spokesman for Bill de Blasio reiterated a statement previously given to YWN:

“Bill believes a strong and secure Israel is vital to the United States’ interest and has been one of Israel’s staunchest defenders against terrorist threats and the daily danger it’s citizens live in. Bill has time and again declared Israel’s right to defend herself, and continues to use the power of the Office of the Public Advocate to combat a nuclear Iran, and to pressure Saudi Arabian Airlines to stop their unlawful discrimination against Israeli citizens.”

Brooklyn DA – Ken Thompson to YWN: I’ll Treat Every Community Fairly and Equally

Sunday, August 18th, 2013

20130818-205145.jpgThe race for Brooklyn DA is heating up. Charles Hynes, the incumbent Brooklyn District Attorney for the past 23 years is ratcheting up support among the rank and file in the Orthodox Jewish community, while Ken Thompson is being embraced by community activists seeking change.

Last week, the campaign of Mr. Thompson undertook a Jewish outreach campaign with massive ad buys in all of the local papers, Jewish websites and daily newsletters. As part of that outreach, Mr. Thompson embarked on a 1-day visit, Sunday afternoon, to the Catskills accompanied by community leaders of the Satmar community in Williamsburg.

Mr. Thompson visited Kutchers, the Krula Rebbe and attended a Hachnosas Sefer Torah celebration at the Raleigh hotel in South Fallsburg.

Speaking to YWN, Mr. Thompson clarified his comment on NY1, saying he was referring to the NY Times report that certain defendants within the community who were treated differently in certain abuse cases. “Mr. Hynes said some horrible things about the Jewish community. He called them Mafia and vigilantes. What I said is what I mean, Mr. Thompson told YWN. “I will make sure that every community will be treated fairly and that everyone in Brooklyn is treated equally.”
Pointing to his upbringing, Mr. Thompson said he understands the importance of equality and the needs of the Orthodox Jewish community.

Mr. Thompson said that his visit to the Catskills indicates his intention to aggressively seek the support of the Orthodox Jewish community in the coming weeks, until the primaries on September 10th. ”I want to meet with voters in the community, sit down with them, look them in the eye and explain them my vision for equal justice,” he said. Adding, “After 23 of Mr. Hynes, Brooklyn needs a new DA.”

‘Yaakov Went On His Way’ – Orthodox Jewish Candidate Steps Up To Run For Mayor

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

DLD Conference 2010New Yorkers might not be aware that aside of the Democratic primary, that’s dominating the news cycle, another race is going on to replace Mayor Bloomberg. In this year’s mayoral election the word “Independent’ has been used a lot by various candidates seeking the job of serving as Mayor of NYC. So far, Adolfo Carrion is the leading candidate as a third party candidate on the November ballot. Jack Hidary, a member of Brooklyn’s Sephardic Jewish community, hopes to change that over the next four months.

Mr. Hidary, 44, a civic-minded technology executive, is preparing to toss his entrepreneur’s hat into the ring for mayor as an independent. He has quietly set up an exploratory committee, assembled a campaign team and established a Web site, HidaryForNYC.com.

“If I did run, it would be a very viable candidacy,” Mr. Hidary told the NY Times, describing his plan for leading New York as, well, a kind of Bloomberg 2.0: socially progressive, fiscally reserved and digitally savvy.

In an interview with NY1, Tuesday night, Mr. Hidary explained the purpose of his potential candidacy. “I go around New York City to all kinds of communities,” Hidary said. “I’m hearing that they do not want a career politician. They want independent leadership.”

“They say, ‘Jack, we are really, really worried about New York after Bloomberg,’” Hidary said he had been told by New Yorkers in recent months, according to the Times.

On Mr. Hidary’s campaign website, his impressive resume speaks for itself. In 1995, Jack co-founded and served as President and CEO of EarthWeb/Dice. Under his leadership, EarthWeb/Dice earned the prestigious BusinessWeek Info Tech 100 award. Dice is the leading IT job board today and is listed on the NYSE as DHX. Since its founding, Dice.com has connected more than five million Americans with a job.

More recently, Mr. Hidary founded Samba Energy, a leading marketplace for commercial solar projects and financing. Hidary, his bio touts, advocated for the use of high-mileage vehicles as New York City taxicabs in 2005 with David Yassky. David was a NYC council member at the time and today is the Chairman of the TLC. Jack and David successfully engaged drivers who are owner-operators who now save thousands of dollars each year driving high-MPG cars as well as leading fleet owners.

Today, the majority of the 13,500 taxis are high-MPG vehicles in NYC helping these small businesses generate more income.

In his TV interview with NY1, Mr. Hidary described his politics as socially progressive, fiscally sound and digitally savvy.

Michael Hidary, Jack’s younger brother and managing director at Samba Energy, told YWN Jack is committed in making a difference for New Yorkers of all communities. “Bloomberg, we feel really elevated the city to the next level in terms of public safety and business environment,” said Hidary. Adding, many people have reached out to Jack to complain about the current candidates in the race, expressing concerns of the Democratic candidates overtaking control of the City and revealing the lack of excitement of the current slot of candidates vying to succeed Mayor Bloomberg.

“Now that Weiner came in the race, it’s really embarrassing that this is what we have to offer for leadership of the greatest city in the World,” he said. Thus, the Hidarys are convinced Jack’s the guy that the city is looking out for. “He’s prepared. He’s willing to sacrifice the time it takes to put in all he has into this,” said Michael Hidary.

YWN: Why didn’t Mr. Hidary join the Democratic primary for mayor, rather than running as an unknown Independent?

MH: “First of all, Jack is a non-affiliated voter which gives him the opportunity to remain objective in expressing his positions on the issues that matter to all, regardless of party line. But also strategically, you have to really look at the race and say why you would want to be bogged down in the war between the 7 candidates. Now they are all going to spend the money in fighting each other and only one of them is going to merge victorious, but exhausted, September 10th or later into October. In the mean time, we are going to have the same amount of money (around $4 Million) to remain consistent and end strong.”

Mr. Hidary’s campaign believes they can build on Mike Bloomberg’s base. “With no heavy weight in the race, we are focused on matching Mr. Bloomberg’s 530,000 votes. Of the 1.2 Million voters in November, a third is Jewish,” Mr. Hidary emphasized. “While we acknowledge we won’t be getting every Jewish vote, we can bank on a substantial amount of votes in the Jewish community, especially in the Orthodox community.”

“In additional, in terms of courting the Hispanic vote, Jack speaks pretty fluent Spanish. He can probably get through an entire speech in Spanish, not Bloomberg’s Spanish. Whereas in the African-American community, if it all comes down to jobs and racial profiling, Jack has a pretty compelling case,” Mr. Hidary explained, is their base of support.

Nevertheless, his odds seem to be long. What remains to be seen, is whether Hidary’s private-sector success and ethnic background translates to politics and ultimately into votes.

Interview: David Storobin – Candidate for City Council – Promises To Continue Fight For School Vouchers

Monday, June 17th, 2013

stroInterview with former State Senator David Storobin, who is running for New York City Council in the 48th Council district.

YWN: What prompted you to run, and how do you assess your chances?

David Storobin:  This was the strongest part of my Senate district where we got nearly 70% of the vote. The lines of this district go from Avenue L down to Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay. This district has voted for a Republican Mayoral, Gubernatorial and Presidential candidate in every election going back decades. I also get a very good vibe from the people as I campaign with so many people in all the different ethnic and religious communities being very supportive.

YWN: Will you overcome the November race and get the same support, in the Jewish community, you got in March 2012?

DS: Yes, I fully expect that the people who supported my candidacy in the March 20, 2012 elections will be with us this time. Most have already told me so.

YWN: What are the issues you are running on, and what will be your focus in the city council, as a member of minority, to pursue what you have started in the few weeks you were in the Senate?

DS: I will continue to fight for more education funding for both private and public schools. We need to expand after school vouchers and fight to push through regular school vouchers as well. As you know, I sponsored the repeal of the Blaine Amendment (this amendment forbids school vouchers) in the Senate, but because I was in Albany only 11 days, it was impossible for me to pass school vouchers. I will continue to fight for vouchers as a Councilman. We need to lower taxes and reduce bureaucracy to create jobs, particularly in this economy. We need to help small business. And obviously, being a sponsor of the repeal of gay marriage, I believe we should continue to fight back against liberals who are imposing their agenda on us.

YWN: Are you guaranteed the full support of the Republican Party this time around?

DS: When I saw the Republican Senate Majority Dean Skelos in March, he brought up the conversation about my run and encouraged me to jump in. Senator Marty Golden, Congressman Michael Grimm and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, the only three Republican elected officials in Brooklyn, have all been very supportive and very helpful. Marty Golden in particular.

YWN: Do you have any regrets about the Senate run in Borough Park last November?

DS: We ran a good clean race focusing on the bills that I sponsored to improve education, reduce crime, create jobs, fund health care. We did much better than people thought we would, winning about 40% in Borough Park despite having a very difficult opponent. I’m very proud of the fact that so many young people in Borough Park were excited about my candidacy, and our data based on the breakdown of the electoral districts shows that we won the under-40 vote.

YWN: Since you have the backing of the Conservative and GOP County, will you endorse a Republican for mayor in the primaries?

DS: I like Joe Lhota. I disagree with him on some social issues because I’m more conservative, but I really like the fact that he was Rudy Giuliani’s Deputy Mayor and in fact was the Acting Mayor was Rudy was out of New York. Joe was part of the team that cleaned up New York, both literally in terms of making the streets cleaner and figuratively in terms of making the streets safer. Politics is a team sport and Joe was part of “Team Giuliani” so he should get some of the credit for the City’s amazing recovery. I believe he’ll make an excellent Mayor.

Russia Moving Ahead with Missile Shipment to Iran

Friday, April 9th, 2010

A Russian missile deal with Iran involving S-300 surface-to-air missiles (NATO codename SA-12 Giant) is about to move forward, which when actualized, will provide Iran with a state-of-the-art anti-aircraft system.

Mikhail Dmitriyev, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Military Cooperation, said talks were ongoing on the delivery of the missile system to Iran, Russia’s state-owned news agency RIA Novosti reports. He went on to explain there have been delays, but the contracts signed back in 2005 have “not been torn up”.

Senior Iranian Official Calls for Taking Over Jerusalem

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki is calling for an Islamic takeover of Jerusalem, blaming Israel’s defiance of American demands for the breakdown of planned resumed negotiations between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority).

Speaking on state radio, the senior Iranian official accuses Israel of trampling Christian and Islamic holy sites, citing the recent re-dedication of the Churva shul as an example, warning steps must be taken to prevent Israel from ousting other religions from the capital. He calls on the international community to act, especially the ArabLeague.

Mayor Barkat Blamed for Spreading Chilul Shabbos

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Many are pointing a finger of blame at Jerusalem City Hall, Mayor Nir Barkat, explaining that since he assumed the leadership of the city, there is an increase in the number of businesses permitted to ignore the law, opening and operating on shabbos.

Adding to the list of concerns of the shabbos watchdogs in Yerushalayim, rabbonim and askanim alike, is Jerusalem Meretz Councilman Pepe Alalu, who is calling on City Hall to permit the Jerusalem Theater to open its doors on shabbos. As the Eida is carrying on weekly protests against the opening of Karta parking lot and Intel, and the Vaad L’maan Shabbos is targeting grocery and convenience stores operating in gas stations, Alalu is working to expand the secular influence on the Holy Capital.

Alalu insists the impetus to open the theater’s doors on shabbos is not his, but that of the operator, who approached him seeking to earn the additional day of business.

Shabbos activists are quick to point out that a number of chareidi functions are held in the theater, such as the United Hatzolah event, and if the theater decides to open its doors and join the chilul shabbos secularists, then obviously the chareidi community will be compelled to take its business elsewhere.

Why is the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Seeking Clemency for Benizri?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Some are wondering what exactly has prompted the Greek Orthodox Church Patriarch to seek clemency for a former chareidi MK and cabinet minister, in this case, Shas’ R’ Shlomo Benizri. While there are various opinions, the fact remains a formal request to pardon Benizri has been filed by the Greek religious leader with President Shimon Peres and Justice Minister Prof. Yaakov Neeman.

Benizri is well-known for big heart and generosity, always giving to the less fortunate, seeking to help those in need, the daily Ma’ariv quotes the Greek Patriarch as writing in his request to the senior officials. It is pointed out the senior Greek religious official’s position in Israel places him in charge of church-owned real estate, including much of the Government Precinct and areas including the Chief Rabbinate’s quarters.

As a rule, the Greek Church does not involve itself in state affairs, making the news of the clemency request even more unique.

The Greek Patriarch explains he is motivated by an acknowledgement of good regarding Benizri, reminding the president that during his tenure as health minister, Benizri assisted an Orthodox Christian family, arranging healthcare when it was required and even arranging for monetary assistance for families when the need arose.

Benizri is serving a four-year sentence after being convicted of accepting bribes, fraud and breach of trust, has according to many been abandoned by party leaders, who have all but ceased visits to him in prison.

VIDEO: YWN Interviewes Mayor Of Bnei Brak, R’ Yaakov Asher

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

YW-BBMI-007.jpg[VIDEO LINK BELOW] YWN interviewed on Monday, R’ Yaakov Asher, the newly elected Mayor of Bnei Brak, home to one the largest concentration of Charedi Jews in the world with a population of over 160,000.

The Mayor arrived in the United States several days ago, and is here to introduce to the US public the establishment of the Development Fund for Bnei Brak, whose mission will be to attract foreign investment to Bnei Brak and be responsible for projects to enhance the quality of life for its residents both current and future.

His first two goals, immediately after assuming office are: to lead the city into economic independence by promoting the building of high-risers in the northern portion of the city,  as well as commerce and related industries; and the creation of a development fund, much like the one founded by the past mayor of Jerusalem, the late Teddy Kolek, through which donors from around the world who understand the importance of preserving this precious Torah city, will support various welfare, education and over-all quality of life enterprises for its residents.

According to Ezra Friedlander, CEO of the Friedlander Group, representative of the Bnei Brak Fund, the visit of Mayor Asher will allow him to meet with important communal and business leaders from across the broad spectrum of the Jewish community in an effort to create interest in this new entity that will focus on initiating and partnering projects with potential investors that will focus in the realm of recreation and special education.

Bnei Brak is synonymous with the timeless values of Jewish tradition boasting a myriad of Chasidic centers, Shuls, famous Yeshivas and can be describes as the capital chesed in the Land of Israel. Additionally, the vast majority of the NY Jewish community shares a close kinship with Bnei Brak both familial and communal. It is with these statistics that great anticipation is being generated towards the maiden trip of Mayor Asher to the United States.

YWN thanks The Friedlander Group, for arranging the interview.

YWN EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Rabbi Metzger After Visiting Jonathan Pollard

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

IMG_1793.jpg

(AUDIO LINK BELOW) This past Monday, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Metzger – along with Rabbi Pesach Lerner Executive VP of NCYI & Mr. Shlomo Mostovsky Naional President of NCYI- visited Mr. Jonathan Pollard in jail. After leaving the prison, YWN was granted an exclusive interview with Rabbi Metzger about the condition of Mr. Pollard. An audio file of the interview is located at the bottom of this article.

With just four weeks remaining until President George Bush leaves office, the nationwide grass roots effort on behalf of Jonathan Pollard is entering a critical phase as people work to remind the White House of Jonathan Pollard’s plight and push for a commutation of his prison sentence. People are encouraged to go to freepollardnow.com every day for the next month and join the effort to help set Jonathan Pollard free. In addition, people are encouraged to urge their relatives, neighbors, friends, and business colleagues to visit freepollardnow.com and participate in this important endeavor.

Since freepollardnow.com was launched and the nationwide grass roots effort began just one month ago, tens of thousands of people have called and faxed the White House.

Because it is essential that the White House hear from as many people as possible in the next four weeks, visitors to freepollardnow.com are urged to continue calling, faxing, and sending letters to President Bush on a daily basis. The website provides contact information for the White House, a sample letter that people can fax or mail, and an online petition that will be sent to President Bush. Visitors to freepollardnow.com are reminded that just 60 seconds a day can help Jonathan Pollard go free.

Pollard, who just began his 24th year in federal prison, has repeatedly expressed his remorse publicly and in private in letters to many Presidents and others. His health has deteriorated significantly during his more than two decades in prison.

In addition, Pollard’s life sentence is grossly disproportionate when compared to the sentences of others who have spied for allied nations. Countless elected officials, individuals from the national intelligence arena and the legal world, as well as religious and community leaders, have described Pollard’s sentence as excessive, and have called for his sentence to be commuted.

“The response to this grass roots effort has been extraordinary, as thousands upon thousands of people have contacted the White House and called for Jonathan Pollard’s release,” said Rabbi Pesach Lerner, the Executive Vice President of the National Council of Young Israel, and one of the driving forces behind freepollardnow.com. ”The next four weeks are especially critical, and we are hoping that people will continue calling and faxing President Bush and urge him to commute Jonathan Pollard’s sentence. After more than two decades in prison, it is time for Jonathan to go home to Israel and reunite with his family.”

YWN Exclusive Video: How John McCain Prevented 5 Jewish Autopsies

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

gluck.jpg

[EXCLUSIVE TO YWN & YATED USA] (VIDEO LINK AT END OF ARTICLE) On Monday, Rabbi Chaim Boruch (Edgar) Gluck, the noted askan and chaplain to the New York City Police Department, during an interview conducted by YeshivaWorld, related a fascinating incident in which Senator John McCain went above and beyond the call of duty to protect the dignity of five Jewish bodies after an awful helicopter accident in Nevada.

Rabbi Gluck related that shortly after the accident, which occurred late on an Erev Shabbos some six years ago, he was contacted. He was told that a helicopter had clipped something as it was flying over a cliff and had caught fire. The five frum Jews aboard were killed, r”l. Rabbi Gluck quickly contacted the police before Shabbos and worked to obtain medical x-rays so the bodies could be identified. The police continued to call over Shabbos and Rabbi Gluck did whatever could be done in the interim.

Rabbi Gluck was in touch with the medical examiner in the local town and related that it was of utmost importance for him to be able to look at the niftarim to determine if a tahara could be done on-site. Rabbi Gluck also made clear that no autopsies would be allowed to be performed. The medical examiner told Rabbi Gluck that a good place to take the bodies would be Phoenix, Arizona, as one of the best morgues in that part of the country is located there.

The medical examiner related that the morgue generally closes at noon. He also said that he had conversed with then New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani who said that he had spoken to Rabbi Gluck who explained how important it is to the Jewish people not to let the bodies lie around and to get them to burial within 24 hours.

Rabbi Gluck and his team loaded the bodies from the makeshift morgue into a van and brought them, with the x-rays, to the airport to be flown on a private plane to Phoenix. The plane encountered a number of sandstorms and initially couldn’t move at all. Rabbi Gluck received a phone call and the medical examiner was startled, as they were out in the desert where there is generally no phone service. “You heard a phone ring?” asked the examiner.” “Yes, it’s my phone,” said Rabbi Gluck, who answered the call.

It was Senator John McCain of Arizona on the line.

“He called to say that they want to close the morgue at around 1 or 2 oclock on Sunday afternoon,” related Rabbi Gluck, “and we might not make it there on time.” The medical examiner would not wait for us and said that maybe tomorrow he’ll take a look.”
“Can your plane fly to Phoenix?” said McCain.
 “Yes,” said Rabbi Gluck.

They landed in Phoenix and the local medical examiner had vans ready to take the bodies to the morgue. Tremendous respect was displayed to the niftarim.

The chief medical examiner turned to Rabbi Gluck and said, “I understand that you are an expert in these things.”

“I have been working on it for forty years,” responded Rabbi Gluck.  “I am the staff of the NYC medical examiner, special assistant to the medical examiner for religious affairs, and I do work on these things and get calls from all over the world.”  “All right,” responded the examiner. “I was just told by Senator McCain, and his chief of staff who is standing by and gave you his home number, that I cannot leave until the bodies are released from Arizona, and you are on your way back to New York City. When the rabbi goes home, the senator said, we can go home.”

Rabbi Gluck eventually left with the bodies at about 4 o’clock in the morning. Rabbi Gluck later told the chief of staff to thank his boss and tell him how much his efforts meant to the Jewish community.

“It is incumbent on me and the people of our beliefs,” said Rabbi Gluck, “to show hakoras hatov, to show appreciation, to someone who went out of his way so far, so that bodies should not be trampled, should not be cut for nothing, and we should be able to make five funerals at one shot one day later. All that is something that we owe Mr. McCain.”
