Israel: Former President Sentenced to 7 Years Imprisonment

(Thursday, November 10th, 2011)
Israel’s High Court of Justice on Thursday morning, 13 Cheshvan, sentenced former President Moshe Katsav to seven years imprisonment, rejecting his appeal of a district court ruling.
The case addresses the president’s convictions on assault and attacks, which his legal team was confident would be fully or partially overturned by the High Court, which was not the case. The court told the Katsav legal team that there was no evidence to support the appeal, and the lower court’s convictions were being upheld, along with the seven-year prison sentence.
The president is being permitted one month to get his affairs in order and must report to prison on December 7th.
