Canadian Officials Backtrack After Declaring Shilo & Psagot Wines Are Not ‘Made In Israel’

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has backtracked on it’s decision refusing allow wines made in the West Bank to be labeled ‘Made in Israel.’

“We did not fully consider the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA),” the statement reads. “These wines adhere to the Agreement and therefore we can confirm that the products in question can be sold as currently labelled.”

On Tuesday, the CFIA had announced it will not permit wines arriving from Israel, particularly from Yehuda and Shomron, to be labeled “made in Israel”, stating they must be labeled “Made in the occupied West Bank”. The letter issued mentioned Shilo and Psagot wines in particular, but it was applicable to all wines produced in the areas mentioned.

Apparently the CFIA felt permitting bottles to be marketed stating “made in Israel” would be a misrepresentation, since in fact, they are produced in the West Bank. Based on the decision to reverse the policy, it is unclear what exactly the CFIA believes.

Canada still does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Yehuda, Shomron, the Golan Heights and areas of Yerushalayim that were liberated in the June 1967 Six Day War.

  1. The bureaucrat from CFIA who made the decisions to label Jewish produced wine should pay the price by being fired.

  2. FYI.
Videotron a Canadian phone company considers chevron as “outside israel”! and charged rates as a foreign country while in Israel.
    People should complain.
