Charedi Parties Fear An Election Is Imminent, Will ‘Really Miss This Government’

The Charedi parties in Israel’s Knesset seem to be running scared following the developments of the past 24 hours in Israel regarding the criminal investigations being attributed to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Party heads Aryeh Deri, Yaakov Litzman and Moshe Gafni were positive that the government would manage to pull itself out of all of the predicaments that they have found themselves in following the police recommendation to charge Netanyahu, and that the government would survive until its mandate comes to an end in 2019. But now it seems the government has been thrown for a loop, one which no one is quite sure of how it will end.

Party leaders are reading the signs and wondering if Finance Minister and Kulanu faction leader Moshe Kahlon will pull out of the government and bring about an election, or whether Netanyahu himself will break down the government and call for an election to prove that he still has the backing of the people. Either way, currently, there is a very real possibility that the government will not make it to 2019.

With a new state witness who was one of Netanyahu’s closest advisors in the investigation known as 4000, the situation looks grim from the public’s perspective and it is unclear how both Kahlon and Netanyahu will react to the new development.

One Charedi MK who wished to remain nameless told Kikar Shabbos that the Charedi parties will “really miss this government.”

  1. Deri is scared that if elections are held, he and his party shas will disappear according to local recent polls, but Yahadut HaTorah will get some 9 seats so they need not worry.

Let us hold tight and see what the future will bring for Bibi.
