WATCH: Sheitel Burning Ceremony in Meah Shearim

A crowd gathered at the corner of Yechezkel and Shmuel Hanavi in Meah Shearim on Wednesday night for a sheitel buring ceremony.

This is not the first time in recent months that they have held such a ceremony.

  1. Looks like it’s being hosed down from the nearby building.
You’re not gonna see that in the U.S. to fast. High quality real hair shaitels are seemingly addictive.

  2. Irrespective of ones position regarding the wearing of a Peah Nachris (btw, brought in the Gemorah), watching a bunch of men burning wigs and laughing is very disturbing. My guess is that these people, who pretend to so “ultra-FRUM” have very troublesome underlying issues with women and Pretzus in general.

  3. There have been many women burning wigs again due to new info about the Indian hair. Rav Elyashiv instructed people to burn human hair wigs that might contain indian hair

Check out the Ami living Shavuos magazine- the main article is all about the new info found about the Indian tonsuring (head shaving) at Tirumala. A new legend behind the tonsuring was found that would possibly make the hair a complete gift to the deity rendering the indian hair tikrovas avoda zora (its a pretty crazy Hindu legend)

Rabbanim even sent people down to India recently to research the topic again!

  4. BaruchLesin –
Nothing new other than extremism is taking over. Most are with an agenda of wanting to do with all Sheitels in the first place. AZ is just another method… just look at the ones involved (from commenting to Rabbanim, askanim involved) and you will connect the dots.

  5. What about donating them to Non-Jewish organizations for kids/adults with cancer? (You can’t derive benefit from these items from Avodah Zora?) Well, donating them will not allow any monetary benefit, plus it looks like this crowd is gaining recreational benefit by the fire.

  6. Gaon-
There is definitely legitimate new information. Just google the legend of Neela Devi and you’ll see this legend is widespread among the Indian people. This story was NOT known by Rabbanim 14 years ago- read the Ami article.
No one should mock anyone following the psak of Rav Elyashiv- do you all know more than the Gadol Hador??

  7. “No one should mock anyone following the psak of Rav Elyashiv- do you all know more than the Gadol Hador??

Yes, and so do many other yidden. In the years since the Rav, Z”TL, was niftar, we have learned much new information on many issus that were not know during his lifetime. So yes, in certain areas of halacha, we revisi a psak from a prior time when new information becomes available.

  8. Idiots at the best!

I personally don’t like the wigs, but the young married women use them to look more beautiful to their husbands and what can I say? These woman are righteous women.

Women like to look pretty, as a man, I need to keep my eyes focused on other things…

  9. BaruchLesin,

Just google “BaruchLesin” and we should find some results indicating the above as well…

A “legend” and it wasn’t available at the time? sounds really off… and, don’t try using the “Gadol Hador” method for your agendas. Rav Elyashiv would certainly not appreciate it.
