Rav Shmuel Eliyahu: We Aren’t Against Chareidim! We Are Against Shas!

elyaRabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Tzfas and a son of HaGaon HaRav Mordechai Eliyahu ZT”L explains the Bayit Yehudi party is not against chareidim as alleged.

Rabbi Eliyahu, a prominent rav in the dati leumi community explains in the Shabbos עולם קטן weekly that “we are not against the chareidim. We are against Shas.”

He explains that in recent weeks he was among the rabbonim meeting with admorim and roshei yeshiva in the hope of reaching agreement and achdus. “I sat with members of the house (Knesset), meeting with many of them. I asked if they can commit in the name of Shas and Aryeh Deri not to betray us and not one responded. Not a single admor, not a single rav and not even MKs from Shas” he explains.

He feels that an agreement must be reached with Agudas Yisrael adding “even if they don’t all serve in the army and even if there is some past baggage, we are brothers and there must be achdus. We share views regarding Eretz Yisrael, Shabbos, tznius, and the importance of limud Torah. They are our brothers, no less than others.”

The rav highlights the need to find a solution with Agudas Yisrael regarding the sharing the burden issue, but this must be done by agreement and not coercion. “We are only opposed to those who sold us out with the Oslo Agreement. We must realize that not all chareidim are made of the same skin. We must warmly embrace Agudas Yisrael and bring them into the coalition.”

  1. Shas voters work hard(possibly the lowest pay, the longest hours of any sector). Very few are in kollel.

So it’s not/never was about work..

Most Shas voters served in the IDF. They have a disproportionate % of combat wounded among their pop. (they were “grunts”).

So it is not/never was about the army..

  2. So that explains why he’s against yeshivos (okay, its only the talmidim he’s against)?

And Shas people tend to go to the army as it is.

The Dati Leumi crowd are looking dumber and dumber as this progresses.

  3. how can this chacham be so blinded by politics to sell his soul and join a coalition with lapid who wants buses on shabbos, conversions not according to halacha, etc etc.??

  4. I believe that it is UTJ/Agudah who quoted in their papers a need to boycott produce from Yehudah and Shomron(doubt if they meant Beitar or Kiryat Sefer)since this is a way to hurt ‘mitnachlim/settlers’ (Bayit Yehudi) for their turning their backs on us. So it isnt just SHAS who have sold out the settlers….UTJ is ready and willing also.

  5. Rabbi Eliyahu.
Sorry but no you do not “share” views with them regarding Eretz Yisroel.
You follow Zionism they do not.
They have said from the Get go that the the goal of the Secularists was to destroy Torah and Mitzvos.
And History repeats itself as once again they are using you and your “machaneh” to destroy Shemiras Shabbos, destroy Chinuch, destroy kedushas yisroel, and yes destroy yeshivos.

  6. akuperma is looking dumber and dumber as this progresses.
For HaBayit HaYehudi the coalition process has never been all about the chareidim, despite what the chareidi party apparachiks and media would have you believe. There are many problems with the political and social status quo isn Israel which HaBayit HaYehudi wishes to change and were indeed elected to change. R. Eliyahu spoke as an individual (yes, individuality is allowed in Torah-true Judaism), not as a representative of HaBayit HaYehudi or the entirety of the Dati Leumi community, ken yirbu.

Unfortunately, Shas has continued to benefit from the votes of naive Sephardim who work, serve in Tzahal and support the state but feel an ‘ethnic’ loyalty to a party claiming to return glory and respect for Sephardim. Rav Eliyahu, being Sephardi, has a more personal issue with Shas. His assessment of the Ashkenazi chareidi political agenda is, however, overly rosy. Hopefully Bennett will stay the course and not allow wishful thinking to entire the picture.

Incidentally, the reflexive reaction of posters here to label anyone and everyone – including talmidei chachamim like R. Eliyahu – as anti-Torah, anti-yeshivos, not frum, etc. – speaks volumes about the true kavod haTorah in the chareidi community (and this long predates the current debate over service in Tzahal). For me personally the rants elicit nary a yawn, but it should surprise no one why all of the chareidi rants, raves and excuses ring more and more hollow to more and more of Klal Yisroel.

  7. It’s not that BY is against Shas or chareidim. It’s that they are FOR Lapid.

BTW, don’t cry to us when the rest of the world decides to boycott you. You are on your own now.
