In terms of economics, the hareidim are left wingers. Indeed, they are probably to the left of the Israeli labor party. In both America and Israel, hareidim favor liberal welfare benefits without regard to paying for them. Indeed, internally, we try to provide benefits (charity, hinuch, etc.) far beyond our means.

It’s very hard to be a hawk on foreign affairs if you don’t want to fight. Remember it was the party of the settlers, Bayit Yehudi, that is responsible for the attack against the hareidim. In any event, if the pro-medinah hareidim can’t stop conscription, leadership will pass to the anti-zionists (Eidah hareidis, Satmar, etc.), so even if a hareidi leader is sympathetic to the settlement enterprise, it’s hardly a priority.

And since many on the left also oppose conscription, it may be easier to get Herzog to end conscription, allow for religious and conscientious objection, or at least agree on no penalties for yeshiva students who don’t join the army.

What the Admorim need to do is fire the inept politicians who got us all into this mess with their chest beating hollow threats and name calling.

The inept politicians did this to us by picking a fight with the Daati Leumi.

It is their failure and they should pay the price.
