This came up 90 years ago as a machloket between R’Kook and R’Uziel. R’Kook paskened that women could not vote or serve in public office. R’Uziel disagreed on both, and R’Uziel’s position has been universally accepted by all of klal Yisrael.

Besides, if the halachah were as you say, all the wives supporting their kollel learners would be violating halachah.

Kol Kevudah Bas Melech Penimah is a Halacha in Shulchan Aruch and Rambam that clearly paskens that the halacha is that a woman's place is at home and it is not in the public arena.
