But part of every elected official’s job includes a certain amount of effort to make sure he/she is re-elected, and the public knows and accepts this. And there is a big contingent of voters in New York for whom public proclamations about Israel are a major consideration and influence on how they vote. So it is necessary for any politician in New York City who wants elective office from anything larger than a city counsel district to pander to that Israel-focused constituency. So I make a speech and get some good press and maybe some of those schmendricks (that’s Yiddish for fools) will vote for me next time around, because the real political issues for the City are arcane and difficult and boring. But say something nice about Israel and you get some votes. And if you don’t say something nice about Israel, some of those pander-hungry schmendricks will campaign against you, even if you are handing out free money in their electoral districts.”

I am not saying that this is what Mayor DeBlasio actually thinks, or that he is insincere in his nicey-nice remarks about Israel, but I am saying that it is ridiculous that a foreign policy matter is such an important issue for voters in a New York City mayor election.
