Israel: Free [Weekend] Newspaper Hitting Competitors Hard

Yisrael HaYom officials report that due to the overwhelming response to its recently new weekend edition, it is increasing publication by 100,000 to 350,000 newspapers being distributed on Fridays around the country. The Friday edition began about 2 months ago, with officials reporting the demand has exceeded all expectations. The newspaper distributes 255,000 free newspapers daily as well.

Since the arrival of Yisrael HaYom on the scene, it has taken a sizable chunk of the daily newspaper market, prompting a number of lawsuits in an effort to stop the growth of the paper, which is steadily impacting the Yediot Achronot market, the nation’s largest newspaper.

In major cities, Yediot representatives are pounding the pavement on major streets, offering the daily for a nominal price of NIS 1, an obvious response to the pressure of the free Yisrael HaYom. To date, the legal actions against Yisrael HaYom have been unsuccessful, and for consumers, the competition is a welcome reality.

  1. well this would really be good news if they dont engage is as much religion bashing as ‘idiot’ and maariv. i just hope that that is the case, but i get all my news from ywn so i will never know.

i once saw a horrible story made up about one of the chief rabbis on the front page of ‘idiot’. i was so upset.he is the chief rabbi for heavens sake- have they no busha?
may hashem bring ’em all back to torah.

  2. To Farfrumpt: There is freedom of the press in EY and the religious newspapers can and do routinely insult the secular and political leadership so while its bad form, Yediot has every right to publish what they want about the rabbonim.

  3. YWN Editor, why do you let articles about this trashy Yisrael Hayom paper? It is so anti-frum, and it has terrible ads in it. (I don’t read it obviously, but just by glancing at headlines, and seeing it over others’ shoulders, you see how terrible it is.)

  4. #3 – Instead of writing “..I don’t read it obviously, but just by glancing at headlines …”, you should’ve written “…I have a friend that reads the trashy paper …”. It much more believable.
