Israeli Journalist Yotam Feldman Arrested in Sinai at Border Crossing

(Monday, March 15th, 2010)

Haaretz journalist on assignment for Channel 10, Yotam Feldman, was taken into custody with a Ghana national on Monday morning. It appears Feldman was on assignment, to investigate just exactly what takes place regarding the growing number of Africans infiltrating into Israel via Sinai daily, looking for employment and a better life.

Feldman reportedly crossed into Egypt legally, via the Taba Crossing, then paying a facilitator to smuggle him into Israel, along with the African nationals.

The infiltrators were detected near the border and Feldman and an African were arrested while the others fled. Both are extremely fortunate that they were no shot, which is not uncommon along the border.

Diplomatic officials are working to obtain Feldman’s release. It appears he is being held in Sinai but the details of the incident were forwarded to Cairo for a decision as how to proceed.
