Of the few peeves I have with the OU, this one is at the top. Legumes is a finely defined category in the plant kingdom. Kitniyot is not that closely defined. Corn, rice mustard, sunflower, poppy and millet are not legumes. Locust trees, carob and some obscure chestnuts are. The modern kosher scene involves a great deal of food science. Scientific accuracy should be reflected in the interface with Yankel K.Public.

Are they going to certify pet foods now? It’s always been a problem and we always have to prepare our own bird seed- it’s muttar to own kitniyos and feed it to our pets, but we never had a guarantee that the seeds don’t have chometz mixed in…
