Seagate – The Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island is starting its rebuilding process months after Hurricane Sandy. The council has two sites that were heavily damaged by the storm, but the executive director says the organization has continued to serve its clients.

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) was completely destroyed, prompting workers to set up makeshift offices around the neighborhood. Another temporary office was built at the Haber House Senior Center, where workers take calls from seniors who need transportation to medical appointments.

At the council’s Hurricane Sandy Social Services Mobile Unit, case workers have met with residents who suffered property damage.

The JCC is also keeping seniors well fed, providing breakfast and lunch as part of its Meals on Wheels program.
