NAACP Head: Even Some NYPD Oppose Street Stops

The head of the NAACP says even some members of the NYPD oppose the city’s policy of street stops.

Benjamin Jealous, president of the NAACP, told a Brooklyn church congregation on Sunday that the civil rights group is hearing from its members who are NYPD officers.

The NYPD’s practice of stopping, questioning and sometimes frisking hundreds of thousands of people on city streets each year has received widespread criticism. Officials say the technique deters crime. Critics say the stops intimidate innocent people and raise issues of racial profiling.

The NYPD did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment on Jealous’ remarks.
