NYC Schools Chancellor Wants Parents To Return MetroCards He Gave Out During Bus Strike

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott gave MetroCards to parents affected by the month-long school bus strike — and now that buses will return to the streets Wednesday, Walcott is asking parents to return cards that still have value on them.

“We want the parents to return the MetroCards,” he said on “Good Day New York,” a morning news program. “If there is cash value, that cash value will be given to us, and then it benefits the system overall.”

Most of the roughly $20 million the city spent on reimbursement costs to get students to school was spent on MetroCards. It is unclear how much of the $17 million remains on the cards.

Walcott said the city saved roughly $60 million on transportation costs during the bus strike because it was not paying the bus companies. The city provided the MetroCards and reimbursements for taxis and gas.

Walcott asked parents to submit their taxi receipts or gas mileage records within the next 30 days for payment.
