MK Yoni Chetboun to Ami: “The Torah’s Values Take Precedence”

Friday, March 21st, 2014
UntitledThe recent Knesset vote to draft yeshivah bachurim pained Jews around the world. A shining light amid the darkness was the bravery shown by one member of Knesset, Yoni Chetboun, who defied his party, Bayit Yehudi, and risked retaliation by casting the single vote against the bill, resulting in a final tally of 67-1. Chetboun was immediately censured by Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett, who removed him from the prestigious Foreign Affairs Committee and instituted other sanctions against him.
In an exclusive interview with Ami Magazine, Chetboun, himself an IDF veteran, explained his reasons for opposing his own party and how he sees his future. He said, “I’m not afraid of anything. I won’t be scared if I lose my political position. The important thing is to remain on the right derech.”

Exclusive to Ami: New Generation at the Agudah

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

01_ami158_coverAccording to Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, the leadership of Agudath Israel of America realized a few years ago that without an infusion of youthful personnel, the organization would face eventual decline, when the old guard failed to be replaced by the next generation.
In this week’s Ami Magazine, Agudah activists reveal the work they’ve been doing to rejuvenate the organization. The Lefkowitz Leadership Initiative (LLI), established by the family of longtime Agudah board member Rabbi Yisroel Lefkowitz, brought Rabbi Shai markowitz, author of The Six Daily Mitzvos and the planner behind the Masmidei Hasiyum campaign, into the Agudah as the coordinator of the new youthful push.
In Ami’s cover story, Rabbi Markowitz and LLI members discuss how they are bringing new energy to everything from the Agudah’s convention to its advocacy in Washington to its Pirchei programming.
