It is interesting how the title gaon is so misused today. Rav Meir Shapiro the Pietrkover Rov once defined the term gaon as one with the intellectual powers of genius which cane at birth,thus a gaon can be a genius who has never learned a word of torah as oppossed to one who possesses a great amount of learning even though he has no special intellectual powers. many gdolei hatorah had to work long and hard to acquire their Torah as they were not endowed with superior intellect! this does not make them less of a gadol or talmid chochom
