Monticello: Major changes underway to Route 17

Kiss goodbye to crossing in front of those oncoming cars to get on Route 17. While you’re at it, say hello to an eastbound exit ramp and an interstate-quality Interchange 106, just east of Monticello.

The state Department of Transportation plans an upgrade of Exit 106, part of the statewide conversion of Route 17 to Interstate 86.

The project is one of dozens needed to qualify Route 17 as a federal highway. About 10 other interchanges, in Sullivan County alone, must be scrapped or rebuilt.

Much of the western portion of Route 17, past Binghamton, has already been converted to I-86. The state said it will cost $600 million to finish the job in the western part of the state. That completion is expected by 2012 or 2013.

Work at the 106 interchange should begin in spring 2008 and wrap up in November 2009.
