Simon Wiesenthal Center calls for Ukrainian probe

(Friday, March 16th, 2007)

The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko to investigate recent acts of anti-Semitic vandalism in Ukraine and punish those responsible.“Silence just stimulates further violence and not only against Jews,” Wiesenthal Center official Shimon Samuels wrote Yuschenko. “It poses a threat to democracy in Ukraine.”
In the past several weeks Holocaust memorials in Kiev, Odessa, Berdichev and Alexandria in central Ukraine were vandalized. Last month, vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in Odessa.
