Citigroup to Reduce Fees on U.S. Banking Accounts

Citigroup Inc. will halve the minimum balance on checking accounts with the highest level of service, in a push to get more customers to use the bank for their primary accounts. Clients with Citigold accounts can avoid monthly fees if they keep $50,000 in combined balances at Citigroup starting Nov. 1, the New York-based bank said in an e-mailed statement. One in 10 American households with a mortgage was at risk of foreclosure this summer as the government's efforts to help have had little impact stemming the housing crisis. Intel said on Thursday that it has agreed to buy McAfee, the computer antivirus software maker, for about $7.7 billion in cash, as the chip giant seeks to expand its presence in security services. U.S. bankruptcy filings have reached the highest level since 2005, government data released on Tuesday show, as the economy slows and the unemployment rate hovers just below double digits.
