Avandia Heart Risks Buried by Drug Company

The pharmacy company that makes Avandia knew more than a decade ago that the blockbuster diabetes drug caused an increased risk of heart problems but covered up the information, according to a report published Tuesday in The New York Times. In a 1999 trial pitting Avandia against its competitor, Actos, the drug company, then known as SmithKline Beecham, found that Avandia posed a heart risk, the newspaper reported. The Dow pulled off its fifth straight gain Monday but volume was some of the lightest this year as many investors took a wait-and-see approach to earnings season, which kicked off with results after the bell from Alcoa. 6:00PM EST: A massive fire has engulfed the roof of a large residential building on East Houston Street and Avenue A in Manhattan on Thursday evening. Numerous fire trucks are on the scene for the three-alarm fire. The building is encompassed by scaffolding, suggesting some kind of construction is underway there. Stocks Soar Past 10,000

Stocks logged their best day in about six weeks Wednesday as financials got a boost from State Street's outlook and investors scooped up some beaten-down tech and industrial shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average 274.66, or 2.8 percent, to close at 10,018.28. It was the first time the blue-chip index ended above 10,000 in a couple of weeks. (Source: CNBC)
