A U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday under unclear circumstances, the New York Times reported.
Both pilots were rescued safely.
The crash occurred as a brief confrontation between Israel and Iran fizzled to an end. It is unclear whether the Apache was shot down or experienced a mechanical issue.
The Trump administration and the US Central Command did not announce the incident before the Times asked the White House for comment.
President Donald Trump acknowledged the crash when questioned by journalists at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday night.
“The pilots are fine. Yeah,” Trump said. “Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine.”
